Review Worksheet I - Participles

A participle is a verb which acts like an adjective. Last year you learned three different types of participles; present active, perfect passive and perfect active. Each one is formed as follows:

Present Active = present stem plus —ns,—ntis,—nti (etc. using 3rd decl. adj. endings).

ex. portāre - portans, portantis  translates as ‘carrying’

Perfect Passive = the fourth principle part

ex. portātus, -a, -um                             translates as ‘having been carried’ or ‘carried’

Perfect Deponent = thus far, we have only seen a special list of these participles.

ingressus, -a, -um - having entered                    conspicātus, -a, -um - having caught sight of

regressus, -a, -um - having returned                  locūtus, -a, -um - having spoken

precātus, -a, -um - having prayed                      adeptus, -a, -um – having obtained
